As the summer season returns to the Mediterranean, the seasonal pattern of increased migrant crossings into Europe once again raises concerns for crews on merchant ships. Despite many discussions about the threat of migration to commercial shipping, and despite the extreme politicisation of the topic within the European Union, little has changed in recent years. The situation therefore remains complex and ship operators should ensure to be aware of potential issues for their vessels and crews.
